Since I stained all 5 of the large frames, but only got the colored topcoat on 3 of them that I now have to sand down to the bare wood, I was thinking if it is possible to use dye over the top of the existing stain to even out the color? If it would work out it would make my life easier to not have to sand the other 2 frames.
The stain is oil based "Varathane" from Home Depot.

Great question Allen. I would have to say no. You were using an oil based stain and now we want to add water based dye over it, I don't think the water based dye will penetrate through the oil surface.
