I just read that New Jersey governor Christie ordered the flags in NJ to fly at half staff in honor of Whitney Houston becasue of her charitable efforts during her life. I'll not verbalize my thoughts (but I bet you can guess).
What's your opinion? Was the governor right or wrong?

Right or wrong? I don't know. Granted she did a lot of charity type of work or so we were told, but I'm not sure she deserved the same rights as a president that has died. It's probably a touchy subject with some so I will basically leave it at that.

When I first heard the the national flag was being lowered in honor of Ms. Houston I believed it was wrong. However, federal statues allow for a sitting Governor to lower the flag for anyone deemed worthy in that state. That becomes a states rights issue in my mind and the Governor will have to answer to the people of New Jersey in this case. Governor Christie has stated that he believes that Ms. Houston has contributed greatly to the advancement of New Jersey and deserves the honor.
There is a precedent for this type of honor in New Jersey. Upon Frank Sinatra's death, flags were ordered to half staff. More recently, Governor Christie ordered the flags lowered for Clarence Clemons of E. Street Band fame. I don't recall either generating much objection but I wasn't paying much attention.
On national note, In my opinion Ms. Houston preformed the greatest rendition of The National Anthem that I have ever heard. I don't believe you should have the flag lowered to half staff for singing a song but I will submit that she inspired millions with her performance on that particular super bowl Sunday. I know I got chills when I heard it. I still get chills when I hear it today.
All of the above is my personal opinion. It is worth ever penny you paid for it.

The best anthem ever sung! Hey Greg, have you ever seen these young ladies!!! You could hear a pin drop
Not to mention Mrs Houstons performance at the 1991 Superbowl was also lip synced!
Just given ya a hard time Greg, but the lip synced part is true. I was disappointed too.

I thought it was a tad excessive - - at first
But after contemplating that one of the factors of the state is a huge minority black population of urban poor, it seemed liker a cheap easy way to put a gesture out there that cost the state not one thin dime and might cultivate some good will.
Maybe.
Hmmmm, maybe right Cliff.

As Greg rightly observed, it's a state's rights issue.
I wouldn't have lowered the flag, but I wouldn't want to be a governor, either.
Now, if the president had ordered it, I'd really be pissed!

Should we be upset if the president apologized to a pack of ignorant fifth century flea infested murderous rabble over the accidental disposal of a lousy book in a faraway land?

Cliff,
I've been pissed since 11/08!
