I have two backsaws in need of something besides PLASTIC handles.    Blister makers is all they are.  Thinking of using some of my thicker Old Oak as stock for the handles....

Closed or open handle????  We'll see how it goes.    I do have a supply of old (too short) bandsaw blades I can gang together to make a decent, flexable rasp.   Coping saws for some of the work....

Will need a source for saw nuts, though.  One of these handles is held on by a single bolt, and a WINGNUT?    The othe is by a couple rivets.      I don't think I can "rivet" a new oaken handle in place.

Stay tuned, this might take awhile.....

There is an Antique Store nearby, and he has a few old hand saws for about $5 a piece.     Figure I can drive over there, and pick up a few saws for parts.    These 'saws" are NOT worth the effort, other than parts.     One has NO TEETH at all, two have paintings on them, another has almost a 1/4" of TAR on the blade.     Handles on all are shot/broke.     Thinking of cutting a deal to rid him of such "junk".      Might find a "Diamond in the Rough", but I doubt it.

Going out to the shop later today.   Going to find enough stock for a couple handles.  Found an old "tollbox saw" that has a few sawnuts in it.  Parts!   That's three, so far.    A little bandsaw work to get thing started?

Went out to the shop tonight (yippee!) and sawed a little Oak.One handle roughed out.number 2. Just in case #1 messes up ( not me...) Drilled out the handhole for my fat hands:and added a pair of sawnuts ( that didn't sound right, did it?)  Started to shaped and sand things out.   Got about halfway there..... when disaster struck!     I turned around and tripped over a beam laying on the floor.    Got back up ( with a hole in my knee) and decided to have a Mountain Dew to calm down ....... NO MOUNTAIN DEW in the shop!    Quitting Time!

Until next time ( and some more MD) I'll finish up this handle, and even add a finish.    As for the kerf for the blade?    I used a "Toolbox saw"   to saw the kerf, AND supply  the two sawnuts.   I used a small chisel to cut a slot for the saw's back.

I still have a second backsaw to re-hab.    Maybe when it warms up again.   There is also a "regular" handsaw that could use a newer handleAt least I won't have to steal another sawnuts.

Kneecap has a small hole it it, from tripping over a beam that was on the floor.    Nail, maybe?   Makes walking a bit rough.    I used a sanding belt to help shape the handles.   I had to reduce the width of the sanding belt by half, so a "Rip" cut was done.    Maybe it will get a stain, maybe just some oil, for a finish.   Need to clean that blade though....
