Maple Bowl with Walnut Inserts.

I had been wanting to try some veneer between the layers of a bowl but didn't like the price of the veneer or the fact that the veneer wasn't a solid piece but rather in narrower strips. So bought a riser block and decided to make my own bowl inserts for between the layers. These inserts are solid wood with no seams and re-sawed on the band saw and planed to a finished size of 1/4 inch thick. Finished bowl is 12 1/2 inches in diameter and 5 1/8th inches tall. With the forum's help have gotten some great tips on how to plane these inserts up to 1/8th inch for future bowls. :)

That's an outstanding bowl. It has delicate look with the thin wall thickness. I like it!

Great looking Bowl Susie, I wish I could do them that big. I'm only able to make smaller bowls on my own though because I can only cut 3" thick blanks. that's not to say that I can't glue different pieces together, and I will be able to later after I get some bigger clamps.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing your latest bowl finished. :) One thing I really like are wooden coasters to set a glass on. Have you ever tried making a set of those?

SQ that is absolutely spectacular, what a beautiful form. I cannot believe how far and how quickly you came to this point with your works. How long did you say you have been turning? You inspire me madam. Just seconds ago I showed my wife this bowl, and guess what! She told me to get a lathe! So it looks like you inspired her too! You have accomplished in seconds what I have been trying to accomplish for the last two years, trying to get LOML on board for a lathe.

I'll now take a portion of the proceeds from the sale of my current rocker and purchase a lathe. I am so excited. Thanks SQ!!!

Back to your bowl, the walls of the bowl taper to more thickness as you get to the bottom?

Is that lathe capable of turning large bowls?

Thanks so much! Glad to hear you are getting a lathe. Every family needs a good lathe! Yes, the bottom is thicker than the walls at the top edge of the bowl. I have been making bowls since Carole Rothman's book on scrolled bowls came out, but didn't start putting them on the lathe until the summer of 2011. I would highly recommend Carole's book if you are interested in making scrolled bowls.

Wow and wow Susie. That turned out great. Resawing those sure gives it a real uniqueness. I really like the detail it adds to the bowl. It finished up very nicely also. I thought I was going to get the rings cut for one this weekend but I had a couple of things come up and didn't get them. I will soon though as I want to give this a try.

Again, very nice job. Absolutely beautiful
