Have to caulk the shower, again.

After removing the old caulk, what can I use to clean up the surface so the new caulk will hold. It's made of a plastic type of material.

Thanks

Harry, the only effective way of cleaning up old caulk that I have found is to use a razor blade, very carefully I might add as you don't want to damage the fiberglass surface. I have not come across a liquid remover although I am sure there is one, I hope others chime in here as well.

In the past I've used what is called an Adhesion Promoter. It's made for application to non porous material. I found it at a paint store and it's used mostly as a primer for painting vinyl siding.

Harry, I am like John, scraping it with a razor blade is the only way I have removed it.

Harry, I googled it and this is a chemical remover that came up. I have not used it but you may want to look into it further.

Scrape it and then clean the surface with denatured alcohol.  The alcohol removes all of the residual gunk for the area.

John; I'll have to check into the 3M remover. I've seen it but didn't know if it works all that well.

If tried the razor blade, remover tool etc before and I had forgotten about the alcohol. I have some in the garage so I'm going to give it a go tomorrow.

If I still have problems, I'll check into that adhesion promoter that Mike mentioned.

Thanks to all

i think ron is right ........it will surely help

Harry, my wife caulks our shower becasue I can't do it to please her.  Anyway, she scrapes the old off with a razor blade and wipes everything down with denatured alcohol before she re-caulks.  Its worked for years.
