The post is quite long and may sound a bit strange, but I think it will be fun and stimulate your "idea of design juices".....I by design titled my post as a question.........What's your favorite Art Deco _________ and to fill in the blank you can use words like Style, Item, Chair, Table, Mirror, Shape, Design, Building, Wall, Ceiling, Light Fixture, Door Bell Chime, Automobile, Airplane, Radio, Street Light, Neon Sign, Hubcap, Hood Ornament, Clothing, Crown Molding, Appliance, Tool, Watch, Woodworking Machine Design, Metalworking Machine Design, Coffee Pot, Gas Pumps, Signs and Advertisements, Electric Fans, and the list goes on and on. Please let your mind wander as we discuss a tremendously important design period of Art Deco / Streamline Moderne / and several other segments of the Art Deco period that began in the 1920s and that arguably ended shortly after WWII, but I maintain some remnants are still viable components of certain design and styling today and that directly influenced the entire world back 90 years ago and as mentioned that even segments of that period reach out and touch our daily lives still today. You might say ............. what is old man Wyatt talking about ......today..........just to mention a few ..........the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Golden Gate Bridge, .......... the basic 34 Ford coupe that ZZ Top turned into a street rod....other cars in the 30s.....several of the futuristic cars of the 1940s that became the everyday car designs of the 50s....like the 53 Corvette.......then look at how many cars designed much later such as the PT Cruiser which was a flash backs to the part of the styling of the 1937 Ford  ...the first radio and tv cabinets, countless chair designs, same goes for tables and other furniture, woodworking and metalworking machinery, and the list goes on and on.........

I debated where to place this post because it could have gone into the "Woodworking" forum as the topic could be very wooden furniture oriented ....... it could have gone in the "Wood Turners" forum, "Home Improvement" as you will see with some of the pics that will be posted, "Free For All", and even the "Old Woodworking Machinery" forum.

One of my hobbies is collecting "certain" Art Deco and Streamline Moderne items such that could have been found in a wood or metalworking shop let's say in the 1920s / 30s / 40s / 50s or were perhaps also found in the house such as electric fans, clocks, radio cabinets, furniture, and again the list goes on and on.

So what I would like to see are some examples of your favorite Art Deco / Streamline Moderne / and variations of the main Art Deco styled items.........

After all you might see a corner of a art deco building that you want to down size the design and use as a chair leg...........or perhaps an art deco chair leg that you want to down size into a pen and pencil set turned on the lathe..........yada yada........

Here are just a few of mine:

This is very interesting Dan. The Chrysler building has always been one of my favorites. Some I like, some do nothing for me. I will not tell you I have the spindle sander you want. I use it alot. Maybe we need to talk.....good post, bob

Nice post Dan, Now I got to go look up my favorite and see if I can get some pictures to post here. My mother still has an Art Deco chest.

Thanks for the topic

Great pics Dan. My favorite is the last one, the bike. Thanks for posting.

Great photo journal Dan! I love em all, especially in machinery, it amazed me that Art Deco even made it into machinery style. You know a movement was strong when machinery is styled after it.

My favorite art deco, hmmmm, I saw this blanket chest made in the art deco style that blew my mind sometime ago on EBAY that I will never forget. It had all the lines, the laminated veneers, I just absolutely loved it. I wish I had saved the picture of it,

I like Art Deco, this may sound funny, but I love old cartoons where Art Deco shows up, in the airplanes, the cars, the clothing. Popeye comes to mind. Funny huh?

Great discussion Dan

Almost ALL of the buildings around me here in East Orange, NJ. are Art Deco style.

Alot of the buildings have had changes to the fronts but the ones that are still intact show art deco stone work, metal work and design.

I like alot of the works of Mucha and have tried to put some of these on wood like this one

I own a few original prints too.

The Church in Erie, PA that we were married in June 13, 1953.  It's called "The Cathedral."

i'ma gonna bring this back to the top to see if we can get more pics of your favorite Art Deco designs.......

Thanks ~ Dan

I love the Arts & Crafts, MIssion and Southwest styles which is very prevelant here in California. Art Deco also has a lot of elements that parallel the A&C movement which I like as well. When I was doing research to get some design ideas to renovate my contemporary fireplace to more of an A&C design, I came across 2 Art Deco fireplace designs that really influenced what I wanted and ended up with.

These are photos of the 2 Art Deco designs I used as models.

This is my fireplace that I completed last year.
