Hi, everybody. I am looking for a vintage " face" vise like the kind made by Record. It is for my personal bench and will go in the "tail" position. I have found myself in need of an end vise lately…Continue

I know I have a saw problem. Last Thursday I received my 14" sash saw filed x-cut from Mark Harrell at Bad Axe Toolworks. WOW! I don't know where to start. First of all, this saw is sexy. My girl…Continue

Thank you to everybody's kind words and thoughts. The hurricane was more like a bad thunder storm here. I guess it went east just enough not to affect me too much. I lost power for 3 days and a large limb fell and destroyed my neighbors deck. Thats about the extent of it. There was little flooding in the area although I hear Norfolk and Virginia Beach got it worse. My tools and shop are fine and my bench is still very heavy and very intact. It looked lonely without any tools under it but…

I case anyone doesnt know where Newport News, VA. is, it is about 20 mins from Norfolk and about 45 mins from Virginia Beach. I live on a penensiula on the Cheasepeke Bay and I am directly in the path of hurricane Irene.
While my neighbors are battening down the hatches, I am franticly cleaning out my garage shop and moving all my hand tools to a safer place. There isnt much to do with the big machines and my bench is too heavy to move elsewhere (I thought alot about how to protect…

I am 90% done with this bench. Today I got the shelf and broad jack installed. I used Hard Maple for the jack and vise jaw. On the bottom of the broad jack I glued two strips of cherry (thats all I really had) to the bottom groove to make sliding it easier and they will get a little wax after I put…

After quite a few weeks of work, I am almost done with my Roubo style bench built almost entirely with hand tools. Aside from an over worked fore plane, I think I used my braces more than anything else. They were used first for boring out the waste of four large mortises in the top with an 1 1/4" bit and a lot of sweat. I managed to get a 2" bit from the flea market that was dull and rusty and I shined it up the best I could and sharpened it to surgical standards. It bored the hole for the…

Adam, I don't have any 8/4 in curly cherry. I do have some 8/4 birdseye, but it was not cheap. It is not 10" wide either. That would be something that would be expensive to say the least. I also have some 8/4 curly maple, but that runs about 5" wide. I use it for leg stock. Later this year I will be getting some other 8/4 stock in. I have a couple mills that saw that for me, but then it has to air dry and run through the kiln, so it can be almost a year before I get it. Sometimes longer. I do have 8/4 plain hard maple though. Lots of that stuff.
