Hi, everybody. I am looking for a vintage " face" vise like the kind made by Record. It is for my personal bench and will go in the "tail" position. I have found myself in need of an end vise lately…Continue

I know I have a saw problem. Last Thursday I received my 14" sash saw filed x-cut from Mark Harrell at Bad Axe Toolworks. WOW! I don't know where to start. First of all, this saw is sexy. My girl…Continue

Tool Review: Knew Concepts Fret Saw

I love my hand tools, both vintage and new. Over the past 15 years I have accumulated a large "working set". Now that modern makers are producing quality tools, there is a large selection of high end products to choose from. So I thought that I would start offering a review of some of the tools that I own and work with everyday. For years I removed the waste on…See More

Ode to Red Oak

I have been working on a head board and two nightstands for a client for two months now. She chose red oak as the primary wood. My first impulse was to suggest something else. I have always considered red oak as the weed of the furniture world. Unlike many species, it grows almost everywhere and in any climate. When you plane it, the shavings are stringy and ugly. It has huge pores and is a pain to finish. I have processed around 90 bf by hand and find myself having to sharpen my irons 3 or4…See More

Still Alive

Thank you to everybody's kind words and thoughts. The hurricane was more like a bad thunder storm here. I guess it went east just enough not to affect me too much. I lost power for 3 days and a large limb fell and destroyed my neighbors deck. Thats about the extent of it. There was little flooding in the area although I hear Norfolk and Virginia Beach got it worse. My tools and shop are fine and my bench is still very heavy and very intact. It looked lonely without any tools under it but better…See More

Hand Tools and Hurricanes

I case anyone doesnt know where Newport News, VA. is, it is about 20 mins from Norfolk and about 45 mins from Virginia Beach. I live on a penensiula on the Cheasepeke Bay and I am directly in the path of hurricane Irene. While my neighbors are battening down the hatches, I am franticly cleaning out my garage shop and moving all my hand tools to a safer place. There isnt much to do with the big machines and my bench is too heavy to move elsewhere (I thought alot about how to protect it). I am…See More

Almost There

I am 90% done with this bench. Today I got the shelf and broad jack installed. I used Hard Maple for the jack and vise jaw. On the bottom of the broad jack I glued two strips of cherry (thats all I really had) to the bottom groove to make sliding it easier and they will get a little wax after I put on the finish.…See More

Braces, Bits, and Big Breakfasts

After quite a few weeks of work, I am almost done with my Roubo style bench built almost entirely with hand tools. Aside from an over worked fore plane, I think I used my braces more than anything else. They were used first for boring out the waste of four large mortises in the top with an 1 1/4" bit and a lot of sweat. I managed to get a 2" bit from the flea market that was dull and rusty and I shined it up the best I could and sharpened it to surgical standards. It bored the hole for the…See More

The Buisness of Benches

I have a problem. No, not my "saw problem" or my "plane problem". I have a workbench problem. I have built seven workbenches in my life and am working on number eight right now (more posts on that are coming). I am fascinated by work holding techniques and dog hole placement. I have a problem.About three weeks ago, a fella called me in response to an add I keep posted on Craigslist for "custom woodworking benches". We spoke for a few minutes and have met in person twice to discuss the…See More

Roubo Bench- Just A Few Pics

I have had these metal saw horses for 11 years. I was jointing the top of my bench on them and this one gave up. No warning or anything. It just died on me. In the process, it also dropped the very heavy top and severely dented the corner. Instead of having a 96" top, I will now have a 92" top. No big deal. The new…See More

One Heavy Top

After days of planing and 3 trash bags of shavings and dust, I am close to done on the top. Currently it is 3 5/8"x19"x96". I think I am going to add two more pieces to the lamination and end up at 22 1/2" or so. Maybe more. This piece is heavy. I already wish I had made it thicker. 5" wouldv'e been better. Oh well, I am…See More

Adam, I don't have any 8/4 in curly cherry. I do have some 8/4 birdseye, but it was not cheap. It is not 10" wide either. That would be something that would be expensive to say the least. I also have some 8/4 curly maple, but that runs about 5" wide. I use it for leg stock. Later this year I will be getting some other 8/4 stock in. I have a couple mills that saw that for me, but then it has to air dry and run through the kiln, so it can be almost a year before I get it. Sometimes longer. I do have 8/4 plain hard maple though. Lots of that stuff.
