This was a great lesson learned for me. Thanks to guys that answered a post in the forums. So I thought I would share this with all of you. After receiving many replies and doing some research I purchased The Veritas MK II sharping guide. Read the instructions a few times and tonight tried it out in the shop. Found an old piece of what I believe to be walnut and laid it down on the bench. Grabbed a littl
e plane and took about 10 srokes on it. This was the result.
Small chips very uneven and really hard to get through the lumber.
Spent about 15 minutes playing with the guide and the instructions and went to work. Started with 80 since the blade was really beat up. Worked my way through to 800 grit wet n dry. Cleaned everything up and re-assembled the small plane. Took another 10 - 12 srokes and the result is easy to see. I will finish the process tomorrow but it was amazing to watch that old beat up blade turn into a nie edged piece of iron.
The difference is clearly visible and did not take much time. Larger longer ribbons of wood. I can say thank you for all those that helped me with this and hope others can learn from my experience.
This was all made possible from the forums here at The Patriot Woodworker, a little research, a purchase from a link here and some time.
The guide responible for this major improvemnet is:
And this is the piece of Marble Tile I picked up at Home Depot for less then $4.00.
The guide was about $67.00 from HIghland
And the information and assistance was from The Patriot Woodworker.
Thank you for reading this.
